6 Holistic Beauty Tips to Make Your Skin Glow

As a skincare brand, we know how important skin is, but we also know there is more to beauty than your skincare routine. To truly glow means harmonizing body, soul and skin. The outer aspects of beauty like skincare are still important, but the inner aspects are equally important – and this means nutrition, relaxation, exercise, sleeping well and giving back. So what can you do to balance your life and really start glowing? Here are our 6 top tips to help you get there.

1. Eat to nourish your skin

Ellen Marmur, Professor of Dermatology at Mt. Sinai Hospital says that when it comes to healthy skin, and especially breakouts, nutrition has a significant role to play. For acne-prone skin, she recommends eating whole (not processed) foods and avoiding hormone-laden dairy products and meats, chocolate, french fries, and other junk foods.Alternatives to try include fatty fishes like mackerel and salmon or foods like avocado and walnuts that are fresh, unprocessed and high in healthy fats (but low on unhealthy trans fats that are found in processed food). And what positive actions can be taken? Well, it turns out Vitamin A and Zinc can help stop breakouts in their tracks. Vitamin A helps regulate the skin cycle, so no acne-causing protein and oil get trapped, and zinc may prevent the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Spinach, pumpkin seeds, nuts and chicken are high in zinc, while you can get a healthy dose of vitamin A from sweat potatoes, leafy greens and dried apricots.

2. Meditate to nourish your soul

It’s not just your eyes that are windows to your soul; your skin can also say a lot about you. During difficult, high stress times, your skin can appear dull and lifeless. If you’ve gone through a depressing time like breaking up or losing your job, your skin probably won’t be glowing. So what can you do to help balance your inner world? There’s no instant cure, but meditation might just help you relax. In fact, an emerging field of research called psychodermatology studies the interaction between mind and skin, looking at the effects of emotions on the skin as well as disorders that have skin manifestations. So how can you get started? There are lots of meditation guides out there, but this one by Jon Kabat-Zinn is available on the app store and is great for beginners.

3. Exercise to nourish your body

There’s no doubt about it, regular exercise can nourish your body and make your skin glow. According to Tim Church, Director of Preventative Medicine at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA: “Every cell in the human body benefits from physical activity”. According to Audrey Kunin, Dermatologist in Kansas City, MO, working up a good sweat is the equivalent of getting a mini-facial. Essentially the cardiovascular activity you experience when you exercise promotes healthy circulation and makes your skin look radiant. And when you sweat, your body washes away dirt and toxins from your skin (just don’t forget to cleanse later and remove any remaining residue).

4. Give back to nourish yourself and others

Holistic beauty is not just about eating right and feeling right; it’s also about giving and caring for others. Generosity is incredibly powerful, and, believe it or not, it can make you glow. So, what’s the science behind this? Well, according to research from Emory University, when you are kind to another person, your brain's pleasure and reward centers light up, as if you were the recipient of the good deed—not the giver. But beyond feeling good and being an ethical person, a study from the University of California found that a single act of kindness typically inspired several more acts of generosity. So one good deed can create a domino effect of kindness and leave you and those around you happy and glowing. Check out Orly Wahba’s TED Talk on the Power of Kindness for more information on how kindness can positively influence you and the people around you.

5. Use products that nourish both you and the environment

Skincare is important and when you choose a routine, opt for one that is in harmony with both your life and the environment. This means it is worth cutting out toxic substances and animal products that can cause harmful effects. To start with, avoid parabens, drying alcohols and SLS. You should also try and opt for vegan skincare. This basically means cutting out harmful substances that can negatively impact your hormones, dry out your skin and harm animals. A gentler cruelty free skincare regime can help you glow without negative effects.

6. Choose Argan to deeply nourish and replenish your skin

When opting for a new skincare regime, choose powerful natural ingredients that are tried and tested, like Argan. Argan is a uniquely nourishing oil that has been used for generations by the Amazigh people of Morocco. It is touted to be a cure for skin, hair and even health ailments thanks to its combination of fatty acids, high vitamin E content and sterols. It is a potent antioxidant and a great part of any holistic beauty regime. This is why Argan is at the heart of FRÉ Skincare. All of FRÉ’s skincare solutions combine organic Argan oil with Argan stem cells and leaf-water for an even more nourishing skincare experience. Combine FRÉ’s holistic 3-step skincare system with the right nutrition, state of mind and exercise regime, for a long-lasting natural glow.
